VMPGA stands for Victoria Malaysian Postgraduates Association.

VMPGA has been officially in existence since 2007 and our membership is continually increasing. Many Malaysians have chosen Victorian institutions as their place to further study in many fields due to various advantageous factors. We welcome all new students to Victoria and to the working of our association.

Some of us may be aware that there is an eGroup,’vmpg at yahoogroups’, established since 2004, to promote discussion amongst us and help newly arrived postgraduates to settle down. Over the years, some of us realised that vmpg should play a more significant role than just an eGroup. Amongst others, the description 'postgraduate' may resonates some awe among our younger undergraduate brothers and sisters, therefore we ought to try reducing this distance or gaps between the olds and the youngs by participating in such associations. Furthermore, our concerns and welfares have been well communicated directly and indirectly to visiting government representatives. Collectively, as a group, we feel that we could play an important role to our nation building and the Malaysian Government has been supportive with some of the issues raised in the past.

In the effort to strengthen our presence amongst Malaysian student communities, there was a concerted effort to fomalise VMPGA as an association. A preliminary discussion was initiated amongst senior postgraduates and a PRO TEM committee was established, consisting mainly the moderators of vmpga and senior members of the 'group'. The job of this committee is simply to make VMPGA a recognised Malaysia Postgraduate body in Victoria, under the patronage of Malaysian Student Department. On 23rd of June 2007, an Inaugural General Meeting (IGM) was held at Malaysia Hall Melbourne. Around 70 postgraduates students have attended this meeting, and a new working committee for VMPGA has been elected. VMPGA has been officially established as a students association in 2007.

Now, in 2009, we have seen many more activities organized by VMPGA in collaboration with other organisations in Victoria. We hope all students would extend their participations to VMPGA by joining as members. The eGroup is a means to attract new members and we need further contribution to the working of this association. There is wealth of experience and knowledge amongst our members that we could nurture and manage to attain greater success as individual and a group. Without such commitment, our current efforts and all the good works started by our predecessors will not achieve its intended goals. Let us contribute towards the betterment of our transitional stay in Victoria and beyond.
